📐 The Telescopic Slab System Explained
Bihar (like most Indian states) uses a telescopic / progressive slab billing system. This means the electricity rate you pay depends on how many total units you consume per month — but different rates apply to different chunks of your consumption, not the entire amount at one rate.
Different rates for different chunks
If you use 250 units, you don't pay ₹6.95 for all 250 units. You pay ₹4.85 for the first 100, ₹5.90 for the next 100, and ₹6.95 for the last 50.
Protects low-income households
Light users (below 100 units/month) pay the lowest rate. Higher consumption enters costlier slabs — encouraging energy efficiency across all income groups.
Manual calculation is confusing
You must calculate each slab separately, then add fixed charges, meter rent, electricity duty (5%), and FAC. Our calculator does all of this in one click.
One extra unit can change your slab
Using 101 units instead of 100 means the extra 1 unit gets billed at ₹5.90. Tracking your usage to stay within a cheaper slab can save real money.
🧮 Worked Example — 250 Units (Domestic)
Domestic (LT-1)
Residential connections
| Slab | Rate/kWh |
|---|---|
| 🟢 0 – 100 units | ₹4.85 |
| 🔵 101 – 200 units | ₹5.90 |
| 🟡 201 – 300 units | ₹6.95 |
| 🔴 Above 300 units | ₹7.65 |
Commercial (LT-2)
Shops, offices, small businesses
| Slab | Rate/kWh |
|---|---|
| 🟢 0 – 100 units | ₹6.10 |
| 🔵 101 – 200 units | ₹7.25 |
| 🟡 201 – 500 units | ₹8.10 |
| 🔴 Above 500 units | ₹9.00 |
Select Connection Type
Choose Domestic for home/residential or Commercial for shops and businesses.
Enter Units (kWh)
Find units consumed on your electricity bill or meter. Enter the number in the kWh field — or use a quick preset.

Go Solar — The Big Win
🌟 Best InvestmentBihar receives 5–6 peak sun hours per day, making it ideal for rooftop solar. A 1 kW system generates around 100–120 units/month, slashing your bill by ₹485–₹918. With net metering, you can even earn credits for surplus power fed back to the grid.
Switch Every Bulb to LED
⚡ Quick WinA single 60W incandescent bulb replaced by a 9W LED cuts that bulb's power use by 85%. If you replace 10 bulbs and run them 6 hours/day, you save around 15 units/month — that's ₹73–₹115 every month depending on your slab.
Fans Before AC — Always
🔥 High ImpactA ceiling fan uses just 50–75W while a 1.5-ton AC uses 1,200–1,500W — that's 20x more. In Bihar's climate, fans alone are comfortable for much of the year. Using a fan for 4 hours instead of AC saves around 5–6 units per day, or 150+ units monthly.
Smart Inverter / Battery Usage
🧠 Smart ChoiceNever charge heavy appliances (geysers, irons, induction cooktops) through your inverter/UPS. These draw massive current, wear out your battery faster, and increase charging cycles — meaning you use more grid electricity overall. Keep inverter loads light: fans, lights, phones only.
Eliminate Phantom / Standby Power
👻 Hidden DrainTVs, set-top boxes, Wi-Fi routers, microwave ovens, laptop chargers and gaming consoles consume 5–25W even when not in use — this is called "phantom load." Over a month, 5 devices in standby can waste 10–15 units. Use power strips with switches and turn them off at night.
Optimise Your Refrigerator
🧊 Always OnYour fridge runs 24/7 and accounts for 15–20% of home electricity use. Keep it at 37–40°F (3–4°C), never over-fill or leave it near heat sources. Clean the condenser coils every 6 months. A 5-star BEE-rated model uses 30–40% less power than an old 2-star one.
Replace Geyser with Solar Water Heater
☀️ Solar WinAn electric geyser is one of the biggest energy hogs at home — a 2000W geyser running for just 1 hour uses 2 kWh. Over a month that's 60 units, costing ₹290–₹460. A solar water heater (₹15,000–₹25,000 one-time cost) pays back in 2–3 years with free hot water after.
Track Your Monthly Units
🎯 Stay Slab-SmartUse this calculator every month. Staying under 100 units keeps you in the ₹4.85 slab. Between 100–200 is ₹5.90. Knowing where you stand helps you consciously reduce usage in the last week of the billing cycle to avoid crossing into a higher (costlier) slab.
Use 5-Star Rated Appliances Only
⭐ Long TermBEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) star ratings matter a lot. A 5-star AC uses 30–40% less electricity than a 2-star equivalent. When replacing any major appliance — AC, washing machine, fridge — always choose the highest star rating available. The extra cost recovers in 1–2 years of savings.

About Bihar Electricity Bill Calculator
Our Bihar electricity bill calculator uses the latest 2026 tariff slabs approved by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC). Whether you are a household consumer under NBPDCL or SBPDCL, this tool gives you an accurate estimate of your monthly bijli bill in seconds — no manual calculations needed.
Bihar follows a telescopic slab billing system, meaning lower rates apply only to units within each slab, not the entire consumption. This makes manual calculation complex. Our calculator handles all the math including energy charges, fixed charges, meter rent, electricity duty (5%), and Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC) automatically.
You can also customise the slabs, rates, and fixed charges directly in the tool to match your exact bill. This is useful if BERC has revised tariffs after our last update, or if your connection has a special tariff category.
